I’ve worked with players of all skill levels and ages. I think it’s important to connect with your student so they buy into your concept and will want to do the practice I’m asking them to do outside of the lesson. I feel I’m strongest at sensing where a player is at physically and mentally and helping them construct an understandable plan for accelerated improvement. The mechanical approach means little if it doesn’t make sense to them so I make sure they’re very clear on the concept as well as the actual movements.
I will usually teach a student starting where he is at. I’ve coached a number of college and professional and players as well as little leaguers and I give the lesson the same level of passion and energy. In a thirty minute lesson, I want a student to get usable information and the opportunity to work through it by hitting off the tee, short toss and eventually when I’m throwing to them. We usually get about a hundred cuts in a workout depending on the starting base of the player.
I keep up on the latest trends in not only equipment but also what’s happening in the baseball universe. I think it’s important to stay informed and active in your community to be able to keep the families advised on the best available resources for their kids.
